Zyloprim Tablet (Generic Equivalent) (Allopurinol)

THERAPEUTIC USES.: -

It is a prescribed drug used to reduce the raised levels of blood uric acid.  This medication is specifically given for symptomatic from relief renal stones and gout that may occur in combination with chemotherapy. It belongs to the category of drugs called Xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It is available in the market by the brand name Zyloprim.

Dosage of Medication

•    This drug is meant to be taken either orally by mouth or intravenously via injection into the vein

•    The tablet form comes in the dosage of 100mg and 300mg. Powder form for injection is available in the form of 500mg/vial

•    The dosage is based upon the severity of the medical condition. For Gout, it may take several weeks to show therapeutic effects.

•    Intake your medication at the same time regularly to ensure maximum benefit out of it

•    This medication may not cure your disease but 

•    Generally recommended being taken after meals to avoid abdominal disturbance

•    If your prescribed dosage is > 300 mg, then it is advised to ingest the drug by dividing it into several small doses. Ask your doctor before tapering the dose.

•    It is advised to drink ample amount of water along with each dose. At least 8 glasses of water are recommended for the proper regulation of water balance in the body. In case your doctor has instructed you to drink less fluid, consult your treating doctor for the same. 

Warnings & Precautions

•     The drug is contraindicated if you are hypersensitive to allopurinol.

•    Discontinue the drug in case you experience the first sign of allergy such as itching, rash, vasculitis, hepatic problems.

•    Do not ingest the drug in case you are already diagnosed with asymptomatic hyperuricemia

•    In case you have renal impairment, use this drug with caution

•    When taken with amoxicillin or ampicillin, this drug may cause adverse drug reaction

•    Maintain proper fluid intake so as to ensure optimum urine output of 2L/day in adults

•    Before ingesting allopurinol, make sure you are allergic to it or not. 

•    Inform your treating doctor regarding your complete past medical history. In case you have renal impairment, diabetes, hypertension, hepatic dysfunction, must tell your doctor beforehand

•    Since this drug has a side-effect of making you lull asleep, do not drive a vehicle or operate a machine once you have ingested this medicine.

•    Avoid taking alcohol while you are on this drug regime as it acts an accelerator and reduces the effectiveness of its therapeutic effects.

•    Since kidney function regresses as the age progresses therefore, older individuals are at greater risk of side-effects as this drug is removed by kidneys. 

•    In case of pregnancy, ingest this drug only if needed; consult your doctor beforehand regarding this.

•    Since this drug passes into breast-milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding to avoid any complications at a later stage. 

How does it help in the treatment?

Allopurinol is a structural isomer of hypoxanthine (a type of naturally occurring purine in the body). It inhibits the activity of the enzyme xanthine oxidase and reduces the uric acid formation without causing any alteration in the synthesis of vital purine. It is metabolised in the liver.
